Onychocryptosis, Uniquis Incarnatus
This is the most common problem encountered in Podiatry, Family or dermatology practices.
It occurs when a deformed curved nail plate grows into the periungual skin (skin around nail) and cause pain, inflammation and infection.
If left untreated, it can become infected (paronychial infection). The hallux (big toe) is most commonly affected.
Management options range from conservative management to surgical excision of corner of nail and sometimes removal of nail matrix (root) to prevent regrowth permanently.
If you are a diabetic, have circulation problems or other systemic conditions that predispose you to infection, there can be serious consequences if left untreated. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and in some cases can save a toe foot or limb.
When treated early ingrown nails can be managed easily avoiding complications.
